CM Rules Question: Pertronix Ignitor III Distributor

Hello,

I am new to CMod and new to FF. I am looking at options to add a rev limiter to my Kent-engined Formula F.

I know there are several popular options from MSD, Pertronix, and Microdynamics.

Lots of people seem to be using Pertronix Flame Thrower Ignitor II distributors and Pertronix Rev Limiters. The Pertronix Ignitor III has the rev limiter built into the distributor. It also adds multiple spark discharge.

From the literature:
Quote:

Ignitor III Features:
  • Multiple sparks thru the entire RPM range.
  • Integrated digital REV limiter with LED feedback for precise RPM setting.
  • Memory safe function stores settings eliminating unintended changes to Rev limit.
  • Adaptive dwell maintains peak energy throughout the entire RPM range, reducing misfires while improving engine performance.
  • Peak current level is reached just prior to spark for maximum energy without heat build-up, increasing coil performance and module reliability.
  • Adjusts spark timing at higher RPMs to compensate for the inherent electronic delay.
  • Senses startup and increases energy for quicker, easier starting.
  • Thermal clad surface mount construction for superior reliability.
  • Built-in reverse polarity and over current protection shuts down the system, preventing component damage.
  • Not compatible with CD or Multi-Spark boxes

More details here: http://ift.tt/2jsYfy1

FYI.. Here is the wording of 9.1.1.B.12.r from the 2016 GCR:
Quote:

Electrical Equipment
Distributor: Distributors are unrestricted provided the original drive,
location, and housing are retained. The distributor is defined as the
component that triggers the LT current and distributes the HT current.
The ignition timing may only be varied by vacuum and/or mechanical
means. It is prohibited to use any other method or component to trigger,
distribute, or time the ignition. The vacuum advance mechanism may be
removed, and the distributor advance plate may be secured by soldering
or welding or by suitable fasteners. The advance curve and advance
springs are unrestricted. Generators/ Alternators: not required. All other
electrical components are unrestricted.
Does anyone see any reason why this would not be legal?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Race Series

We are working with NASA Texas to start a Prototype run group so we can race without GT cars on track. The prerequisite is to get enough cars to justify the track time.

Typical format is Friday Test & Tune, Saturday Warmup, Qual, Race and Race. Sunday Warmup, Qual, Race and Race. Race 2 Sunday sometimes is longer than 25 minutes.

There is also the option to run either Time Trials and or HPDE4 if you want even more track time. You could get up to 4 hours of track time not counting Friday.

We would run different classes in the group to allow for the range of cars from Stohr/Wolf/Devenport to Radical SR3s, etc.

NASA runs all the Texas tracks, NOLA and COTA.

Survey question is:

How many people would be interested in racing with NASA Texas?

Race Prepping a Pinto Crankshaft

So the obvious things apply.

- Extensive cleaning of oil passages
- Smoothing of passage inlets/outlets
- Polishing Journals

If grinding is needed:
- What is the minimum reliable main journal size?
- What is the minimum reliable rod journal size?

GCR 9.1.1.15b says:
Quote:

A standard crankshaft shall be used or any crankshaft that is a
replica of the original crankshaft and of the same material may be
used. Spot machining to achieve balance is permitted. Tuftriding,
Parkerizing, shot peening, shot blasting, and polishing are permitted.
Minimum weight: twenty-seven point five (27.5) lbs.
Are these treatments substantially or marginally beneficial?

What should be added to the list?

(This should be a much shorter thread than the block prep :D )

New floor pan/bulk head

Hello All,

I'm going to asked about drilling the holes for the rivets in the New floor pan/bulk head, so the already bulk head has the holes drill out and I'm guessing that this was the original bulk head panel because of the one set of holes for the rivets in the frame and I tried to match up the holes to my New bulk head panel and of course they don't match up, so my question is

How do you match the holes to the New panel to the old frame rivet holes?.

Spent a lot of time getting this panel just right and would want to jack this up or just drill a bunch of new holes in the frame.

Thank you for all your input

Ben

Acceptable oil pressure in a Kent FF

Hi Guys

I need advice (maybe just reassurance). My engine runs Motul 5/30W. Its supposidly fresh ish (10 hours racing). New oil pump. On cold start up we have about 60psi oil pressure. If I warm the engine to 80 degrees, let it soak, then rewarm just before the race, we run an oil pressure around 45psi for the first few laps (at race revs, taken on the MyChron 3 XG data) but by the end of a 20 lapper we are down to 35 psi. Its always at 80 degrees water. I have big radiators and a thermostat. Leakdowns are around 6-8%. Air temp varies from 60-90 degrees.

I am guessing the oil temp is going up and the viscosity is going down.

Is this cause for concern? Is the bottom end getting baggy? Is 35psi too low.?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Great Video Analysis Tool

A friend developed a side by side, synched video player that will work to compare any two laps from any cameras. You can use Go Pro, Smartycam, or videos downloaded from YouTube and Vimeo. It also has slow motion playback, single frame movements, and looping to look at one specific section of videos.

I don't have anything to do with it other than doing some beta testing and finding it really useful. Hopefully it helps some other folks.

FE for Sale #36

Selling my FE that I took in trade for my F6 Blade. I have not run the car. Just don't have time to race right now. Want the cash for putting into some street toys.

Asking $24

Car currently at YoungRacing near Hiram, Ga. Car has been gone thru by AJ Snyder (crewed for Paul Schneider for several years)

Compression numbers are around 180 except cylinder 2 is 100
New input shaft by One Formula
One Formula said the gearbox was in impeccable condition
New RF wheel bearing
Most hardware is new
CDS data monitoring Steering, Oil Pressure, Brake Pressures for sure and GPS system
New engine belts

Items that could use service soon
RF A Arm Spherical bearing
Steering rod chassis bearing
Crush box has slight damage, but not of concern

Does NOT have front tow hook upgrade
Three sets of wheels, two have 2016 American Racer tires (would not recommend using)

From AJ Snyder:
"Outside of the engine, all in all this is a rather good car. A full extensive inspection was done on the whole vehicle. A couple of items that were in dire need were replaced and notes made on others. My personal detail orientation would change a few nit picky items that are merely labor intensive with no need for parts. With a new engine and front tow hook update, this will make someone a really good car."

I called Enterprise and a top end rebuild is $3500 and a full engine exchange is $5500. I'm asking $24K because of the engine.

Carb Jetting - noob question

Guys,

I have been reading a Webber book over the weekend trying to get a handle on knowing how to guess the jetting.... no help. LOL

I think I get the idle jet and screw stuff (thank you Moses for showing me at the track!)
The question comes in on the main stack...

Emulsion tube never changes pretty much, correct? And I get that I need to watch the main jet to an EGT in the realm of 1300-1500 (max 1600).

Is there a rule of thumb of how many degrees air temp per main jet change and idle jet change? In the shifter kart, it was roughly 7 degrees per main jet.

I appreciate any advice, this will help me get the thing a starting point when I roll off the trailer. Thanks!!!

MC motors in F500

I want to clarify The history of engines in F500 and define my involvement in the engine changes over the last 25 years. This is just the way it happened.

1. I always have been and still am a big fan of F500 and the 2 stroke engines. If I was personally still racing I would be racing with a Rotax.

2. I started in the class in 1985 when I built my first F440 car. This is when we used Kawasaki 440cc 2 stroke engines.

3. After a few years the class switched to the AMW 500 cc 2 stroke due to running out of the Kawasaki engines.

4. The AMW engine was notorisly unreliable.

5. After the 2nd year of the AMW engine debacle I took it upon myself to research other 2 stroke engines. I contacted 4 snowmobile manufacturers about engines.

6. I was finally able to make a deal with Bombardier to supply engines to the class after having a long discussion with the VP of Bombardier.

7. I personally put together the entire mass of paperwork and working directly with the tech department and the CRB. I managed to get approval for the 494 non rave valve Rotax motor.

8. The first cars put together with the 494 were NovaKars and this included conducting dyno tests on both the AMW and the Rotax 494 which I supplied to SCCA. BTW Dave O'Brian and I paid for all the dyno work. Just like everyone else I had to purchase my 494 engine from the distributor that Bombardier defined.

9. Within a year or 2 the vast majority of cars had been converted to the Rotax 494. Engine reliability was dramatically improved with the Rotax. It still took a couple of years to get them developed for use in cars. Frankly, I am certain that the change to the Rotax saved F500 from a certain end of the class.

10. About 8 years ago others, not me, proposed the use of 600cc motorcycle engines.

11. I was originally against the implementation of the MC engines in F500 until I called up the VP of Bombardier again to discuss the continued use of the 494 engine. He then told me that the 494 in all versions was dead and that all 2 strokes would be out of production within 5 years due to emission issues. Of course this info had a huge impact on my position wrt the use of MC engines.

12. I then decided to put a car together with a 600cc bike engine. This I did and then designed and build fixtures to dyno the MC engine on the same engine dyno. The total cost for the dyno work was about $1500 and I received donations form 4 others interested in the MC engines totaling $400. I paid the rest.

13. Now Bombardier is still building 600cc and larger 2 strokes as they have figured out the emission issues but for how long will this continue?

14. Every snowmobile manufacturer now manufactures more 4 stroke sleds than 2 stroke sleds. The time of the 2 stroke engines is coming to an end.

15. I still believe that the future of F500 is with 4 stroke engines if we want this class to be around in another 5-10 years.

Compomotive Wheel Set

Compomotive wheels. Reasonable shape but I was planning on getting them painted or powder coated. 3.750" PCD and they measure 100mm from the top of the inboard bead to the mounting face. These wheels are marked FF1600 only and are a little on the heavy side to be honest. $200 plus shipping. One wheel has been media blasted, the other three look like this -

2000 VD/HONDA for sale

For immediate sale: 2000 Honda. $38,000 All serious offers considered for fast sale.

The car has been in these parts since new. We ran it from July ’15 through the Runoffs this year. It’s an exceptional car. It was engineered and maintained this past 18 months by Rick Hayes; it’s in top condition. In fact, the car’s performance last year, just won the SCCA 2016 Mechanic of The Year for Rick. His preparation was masterful and he faced some of the best mechanics and engineers around during 2016. Rick has been near this car since new.

It has all the fast bits we felt worked. The car was driven by a rookie in 2015 and took 5th at the Daytona Runoffs. The driver’s fifth weekend. The car set a track record this year at High Plains Raceway. At the Sprints this year, the car walked away on Sunday.

We took the car to the Mid-Ohio Pro Series this past July for the driver’s first dip into that level and the car did a 7th, 9th and a 5th. We were extremely conservative running in a Pro pack for the first time. The car also ran the RCFFS at that M-O event and lead those races while creating a draft for the CFs behind us to set a new CF track record.

The entire season the chassis adjustments made for Hallett, HPR, Pueblo Motorsports Park, RA, M-O and more, were frankly not much more than ride height. Maybe a little but not much. The car loves the new spec tire. We tested 360 miles over two days preseason to hit the sweet spot and start strong.

The HONDA engine is a monster as witnessed at Daytona and RA as well as short tracks like HPR and Hallett. The car is fully wired and comes with data and video. Video from several tracks is available to serious buyers allowing you to see a full AIM dash view of the performance, etc.

We are listing the car at $38k. With the below spares package- I feel that is a steal. It’s ready to race with spare corners if needed for an extensive campaign. It is a very straight, true car. The gears are worth more than $10,000 alone. The corners and body pieces more than $8,000. Truly race ready as it has the M-O Runoffs prep on it and has sat since in our shop.

The car must go; any reasonable offer will be entertained. This is a ‘no excuses’ honest car. If you want to take the car out of the equation and win any SCCA event, this is your car.

Water Outlet 2.0L Pinto

I am wanting to modify the setup of return water from engine to the top of radiator. To do so I am going to need a water neck that is pointed at a different angle than what is on the car now. I have been considering cutting this neck in half and having it welded back at the angle and direction I need. If I could find a cast neck that is facing the correct direction, I think it would come out financially more logical to buy a new one. Then, I would never be worried about a weld.

Are there other model cars or year models that have water outlets the same as the 2.0L pinto? Does anyone have some advice on where to search for alternative water necks for this engine? I have attached a photo of another persons build photos. The neck he is using would possibly work for my application. Any idea what this is, or where to get it?

Thanks

Radical Gearbox Reverse

I am going through an SR8 I recently aquired and reverse appears to be non functional. It has paddles and I use the lockout lever to get to neutral and try to select reverse from there but there is no engagement of reverse. The indicator says R but it's still in neutral. Also tried manually shifting at the gear box - same thing. 1 through 6 work fine.

Any experience out there on this?

Kinky stuff

I am having a problem with my rear brake line kinking where it crosses the edge of the bottom of the oil tank /bellhousing, about 6 inches from the T fitting. Does anyone route theirs differently, or have any ideas as to how to prevent this?
