Solo classification question

Ran my Formula First (FST)at the Auto-x meet last weekend with with an engineering student that I work with driving for me. We had fun getting issues sorted out and the tires dialed in a bit. We were very well received and drew a lot of attention from other young engineers in attendance.

First off while skimming through this form i see a lot of FF cars and competitors obviously, are there any other FST here on Apex running autocross?

Classification
I have just reviewed the Solo rules for formula cars and it seems to basically boil down to one sentence, "CM and CF must conform to current year Club Racing GCR". At that event I registered as C mod I assume that is the same as CM but not sure that is the right class for this car.
Any insight and advice is appreciated.

Swift DB3-89 Bodywork

I'm trying to find new bodywork for my DB3-89 and am a little confused as to what is specific to DB3's and what is DB1 & DB3.

I believe the Nose, Engine Cover and Lower Side Panels and Roll Hoop Fwd Shroud are specific to DB3's, the Main Side Panels and Cockpit are universal. Are there any bodywork differences for the 89's?

Can anyone confirm or correct?

Many thanks,

Ian

Injection Drive Pulley

I'm in need of a drive pulley (XL timing belt style) for a Lucas Metering Unit as fit to Brabahm Super Vee engines (and others) back "in the day." Kinsler tells me it' a proprietary part made by Cosworth and they have none. None of the "off the shelf" pulleys from the industrial supply houses match up. I have the option of using some pulley stock and making one but thought I'd check here first, just in case.

Swift 008a with oi4 Updates For Sale

1998 Swift 008a with 014 Updates - 1.8 hours on Hasselgren

$42,000

This Swift 008/014, Chassis #007, was purchased new and used in the Pro-Atlantic Series by Lynx Racing. Lynx had 4 008’s in its inventory at the time, and #007 was the test chassis. It also carries a CART Registration #206. According to records, after Lynx, it was stored for a number of years before it passed to a second owner who ran it 3 times after which it was acquired by a Pro-Atlantic team based in Iowa City, Iowa. Under that team, #007 qualified for the 2007 SCCA Runoffs. The Chassis was strengthened in 2000 at the Swift factory with new laminated chassis supports and the chassis upgraded to 014 with the addition of 014 tunnels, uprights, and wheels. All chassis points are scribed to match the chassis number. The powertrain has been with Hasselgren since new. The powertrain (engine, differential and gearbox) have all been rebuilt by Olsson Engineering in 2011. 1.8 hours have been run on the powertrain since that time. The clutch is a Tilton and has 6-7 races on it. Fire system was installed in 2011. New AIM EVO-4 dash installed Dec 2016. New Willans belts Dec 2016, good to 2021. Vehicle comes with a clean SCCA Logbook. In 2014, the car was tested at New Jersey Motorsports Park where it ran 6 laps without incident. The car has never been in an accident. Body was stripped and repainted to show quality in 2014 in the existing paint scheme by Carl Haas.

The Swift is in original 008 configuration with 014 upgrades. The chassis is carbon/epoxy pre-preg with an aluminum honeycomb core monocoque. Bulkheads constructed of carbon/epoxy and aluminum for added strength and stiffness. Partially stressed engine mounted to a magnesium bellhousing with additional support provided by chrome-moly steel trunnions. Wings are Carbon/epoxy pre-preg and independently adjustable front and rear. Suspension is comprised of unequal length A-arms with multi-positioned pushrod rocker (front) and unequal length A-arms with an actuated pushrod rocker (rear), with cast magnesium uprights front and rear and cockpit adjustable blade-type anti-roll bars. Steering is Rack and Pinion with MOMO Wheel. Brakes are Brembo 4 piston calipers, fully vented cast iron 313mm x 24mm floating discs, front/rear. Also included are 12 wheels: 2 sets of front: BBS forged aluminum 22.5 x 9.5 x 15 and rear: BBS forged aluminum 23.5 x 11.0 x 15 and 1 Set Dunlop aluminum transport wheels.

The Hasselgren Engineering 1.6 litre inline 4, dual overhead cam, fuel injected 4AGE Toyota with only 1.8 hours flows through ceramic coated headers. Differential is of Salisbury-type with various ramp options with roller shims installed and has less than 2 hours on rebuild. The gearbox is a Hewland NST 5 speed sequential with utilizing a stressed aluminum case with integral suspension mounting with less than 2 hours on rebuild. A factory manual is included. Cooling is left sidepod-mounted FLUIDYNE water system with pre-pressurization capability. Oil system is dry sump system with the oil tank incorporated within the bellhousing. Heat exchanger mounted to right inlet duct. Instrumentation is a new AIM EVO-4 (December 2016), and electrical system controlled by Techlite ECU with remote battery hookup. A lightweight alternator is installed w/ 11.6V on-board Alarm. Fuel Cell is a 15 Gallon FIA FT3 Approved with a submerged pump internal to the cell located in monocoque in 2011 with twin pumps in cell.

SCAM Alert - trailers on Craigslist

There is listing on Craigslist for a trailer that is a verified scam. I called both ebay and Craigslist. Craigslist has done nothing about it. There are currently two listings offering a way-too-good-to-be-true. The listings show a like-new 20' trailer with glass windows and a lift-up access panel/door and offers it for around $2000 ($2020, $2033, $2040, etc.). Ebay wanted the listing info, which I sent. The seller claims the trailer is waiting to be shipped so cannot be picked up, and seller wants your info to complete the sale through an "ebay purchasing process." No such thing, says ebay.

To all Swift DB-1 owners; crash attenuator

Hello guys,
We have all discussed some form of front crash attenuator to improve the safety of our cars in a frontal impact, and protect our legs and feet. This is a well known safety concern for DB-1 owners, and I like being able to walk. I think that an attenuator has never been available due to the fact the nose has been deemed too short to make a "perfect" crush structure. I am no longer looking for "perfect". I am looking for the best we can get within the confines of the swift nose area. There is no SCCA requirement at all for pre 86 cars as I understand it, so whatever we have will be "legal." Since this has been batted around for over 7 years that I know of, with no results, I've contacted SE composites to make the best structure we can get within our nose area. The "football face-guard" we currently use is nearly useless, and quite possibly dangerous. The new design will be significantly safer.
This will be a PROFESSIONALLY BUILT,CARBON-FIBER, BOLT-ON STRUCTURE with probably a two-zone design [crush-area backed by a bulkhead type zone just in front of the master cylinders]. It will COST $550 and be ready in about 6 weeks, but it won't happen unless I can get 5 more people to give firm orders, and put down a $250 down-payment. The plan is to drill out the rivets holding the tube structure, expose some frame at each corner where the tube structure had been mounted, and weld on a bolt to attach the new structure, so it shouldn't be too difficult to adapt to, yet will still hold on in an angled hit.
If we get enough interest, we can get this done.
Contact Ben at SE composite:

Suite 100

Also post here, so others will know if we are getting enough interest to make this happen.

Aviation 100 octane Low Lead in Radical?

I am having some difficulty sourcing automotive 100 octane fuel for my incoming Radical SR3 1500. I understand that the radical doesn't have a knock sensor so I have to worry a bit about denonation. Rod end IDs

Gents;

I was thinking of fabricating a trammel bar for my RF-95 (as well as any other car), but all my stuff is in Minnesota.

Similar to this, but I think I can do much better. What I need is all IDs of the typical rod ends, say from 10-32 (ARB front links) to 1/2" (or the lower rear A-frames on the RF95), which ever are larger.

If I make one, I can easily make a couple dozen or more for resale at my cost plus a couple bucks to help pay for the miter saw + shipping.

Any help?

Tilton Clutch Slave Cylinder Help

Changing from the standard Van Diemen clutch release on my Ford to a Tilton. I am having trouble though figuring out if it will fit.
I have taken measurements and to me it seems like the new system is not going to fit. When I measure from the back of the engine to the fingers on the clutch, that distance is greater than the distance from the front of the bellhousing to the start of the release bearing (by .3-.4"). To me, this tells me that when I put the car together the bearing will already be pushing on the clutch and possibly causing problems. Any tips out there or ideas to what I am doing wrong?

Stohr double shifter cable vs single cable

My car chassis #20 and my brother's chassis #9 have the old-style double push-pull cables to operate the shifter. In 7 seasons of racing, we've each had 1 failure.

Later cars went to a much heavier single cable.

I have all the parts to switch to the single cable system.

Is switching to the single cable an improvement?

Thanks in advance.

How to hold throwout brng in place

I am old to FF, but new to csc (concentric slave cylinder) type throwout bearings on these cars.

When I get ready to mate my engine to the Mk9, the throwout bearing won't stay in place, so I can't put them together. I thought the problem was worn tangs on the i.d. of the bearing, so I bought two and they pop off too.

I once thought the idea was to glue the bearing to the boot on the trans side but that doesn't hold the bearing back far enough.

Is it ok the glue it to the clutch diaphragm as shown? I used a very, very light skim of rtv.

Brake adjustment, with bias adjuster

I have a brake bias adjuster valve in the cockpit of my car. I'm guessing this is just a valve that, when open all the way, gives full pressure to the rear brakes (no bias), and as it is closed it starts to choke off some of that pressure to the rear, giving a bias to the front.

So please tell me if I am adjusting my brakes correctly. This is what I do:

1. open the bias valve all the way
2. adjust the front brakes until the pads just begin to rub, then back off 2 notches
3. depress the brake pedal until the front brakes lock and hold the pedal in that position with a clamp
4. Adjust the rear brakes until the pads just start to rub, then back off two notches.

My thinking is that I now have brakes that are naturally biased to the front, and full adjustability with the valve to create more bias to the front by closing off the rear brakes as needed.

Is this correct?

Bonus Question:

The last time I drove, under full braking, the front tires wobbled left and right pretty crazily. Is this normal or a sign of brakes out of adjustment, or something else? (hence question 1, "am I doing this right?")

Thanks for any help. First race is April fool's day and I don't want any surprises!

Round #1 -- VDCA 'Wild Hare'

Dust the cobwebs off the car, pack your Nomex and kick the tires - its time to get cranked up again. Round 1 of The Royale Formula Ford Challenge Series happens April 7-9 at Virginia International Raceway, with the 15th VDCA Wild Hare meeting. Using the full 3.27-mile course, this is a terrific track with great history, challenging slow and fast turns, the famous climbing esses, all in beautiful rolling countryside. If history is any guide, the Ford race will be closely fought.

Encouraged by Doug Meis, VDCA has listened to our requests for more exclusive Formula Ford sessions and, despite the limited track time available to VDCA, (they share the event with the BMW Club) they have agreed that we will have three Formula Ford only races – two Saturday and the Challenge race Sunday, plus Friday practice and qualifying with the sports racers and a possibly mixed race Sunday afternoon with any non-S2000 racers. VDCA has created the best FF schedule possible at this iconic track; now we need to follow through with entries to support that decision and put the Wild Hare and the Royale Formula Ford Challenge Series on a sound footing (pun intended) for the future.

It will be a relaxed and fun show including:
  • Friday night Royale barbecue, food and drinks included, Plus –
  • Raffles for Hoosier Formula Ford tires (one pair per class), KFP brake pads (courtesy Powerslide Motorsports), and Quicksilver RacEngines labor.
  • Stonebridge Cryogenic and Momentum Motorsports awards (good for REM/Cryo treatment and alignment labor, respectively), as well as an award sponsored by RaceQuip.
  • VDCA dinner at the track Saturday evening – the BEST dinner of the season (Sorry to all other track dinners - this is the one you should all aspire to. And thanks for setting the standard, VDCA!).
  • 7 sessions - Three Formula Ford only races – 2 Saturday and the Royale Challenge Race Sunday, plus 2 practice sessions Friday and warm up and additional race Sunday.
  • Royale Formula Ford Challenge Series group photo and awards presentation immediately after the Sunday Royale Challenge Series race.
  • NEW 'Field Champion' Award introduced for 2017 (a drivers choice award)

The Green Flag has dropped and registration is open at: http://ift.tt/2mwyslz Early Bird entry is $500 so save $100 now!

What better way to start the year than at a spectacular track in Virginia in Spring! Get you entry in and we look forward to seeing you.

If you have questions about your eligibility for a Formula Ford race entry, please contact Chris.shoemaker@royaleracingllc.com

See you at the races!

Merlyn Stub Axle and Hub Available?

Merlyn MK29
Found stub shaft and hub loose on LR up right. The nut was loose and caused some wear on the spline connection. The splines on hub seem worn and the stub shaft splines are worn as well. It is difficult to determine where most of the wear is because I do not have a good spline shaft to check wear on the internal of the hub.

Questions
Is the Flange and Stub Shaft, a part off of some type of car or was it purpose built. ID ??

Is the transition hub from flanged hub to CV joint (bell shaped) is it a piece that can be purchased or was it machined for this purpose.

Anybody have a recommendation on how to best to repair male splined end on stub shaft and spline bore.

Does any one out there have a stub shaft sitting on the shelf they would consider parting with??

Thanks

Indy Car Race Car Lifts

Citation FF/Honda

Car was built from a FC for the 2011 F1600 season. Steve Lathrop designed the frame cradle for the Honda and Eric Langbein did the fabrication and installation in his shop. Lathrop also specified Penske shock specifically for the car and did the valving. Only five cars with this design were make. They have many Runoffs and Pro wins. A blog of the build process can be seen here: (over 120 photos; see the 2011 posts)

http://ift.tt/2mmldVg

Car participated in the 2011 and 2012 F1600 pro races with a 47 year old driver unit (Sean). Car proved to be very competitive and Sean had several top ten finishes. (Damn those 15 to 18 year old kids!)

  • Optional HPD harness
  • AIM EV04 data system and MyChron Dash

FS Hawk Blue HB123 E.535 Pads

I'm switching to LD19s all around so have an extra brand-new set of Hawk Blue pads for my peculiar front calipers taken from some British sporty car. Here's what they are:

http://ift.tt/2lSOjOD

I'm asking $70 shipped within the U.S. and will toss in a few extra sets with about half their thickness left. If you can wait a few weeks I'll have the old calipers off and can sell them for, say, $50 each plus shipping.

Alan McCall

A friend in NZ emailed me last night to tell me that Alan McCall died of heart problems in Auckland NZ earlier this week. Another of the Kiwi racing exodus to the Uk in the 'good old days' was probably better known for his Tui race car connection here.
Phil Creighton

"Ex-McLaren engineer who was also behind the Tui cars. Allan came to the UK in 1963, as a young 22 year old, to get into racing, and like so many others, he found his way in by being a racing mechanic. He worked for Lotus on their Indianapolis 500 efforts as a mechanic for Jim Clark, but also worked on Clark's Lotus Cortina in the British Touring Car Championship. McCall then also worked with Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren in the latter's Can-Am team. He set up his very neat and capable Tui designs, with the cars appearing in Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula Atlantic, Formula Pacific and Super Vee. However the death of Bert Hawthorne in one of his cars at Hockenheim in 1972 was a crushing blow. He later worked for Middlebridge Racing in Formula 3000 as David Brabham's race engineer in the 1980's and remained involved with the sport as an independent design consultant. In 2016, Allan won a Historic Heritage award from New Zealand's motorsport governing body."

Looking for Pinto FC's

I built this offroad race buggy to enter some events with a buddy. He is no longer around so the plans for this car have changed. I would consider trading this buggy off for a Pinto powered FC plus some cash. Or a couple of Pinto FC's with some spares.

Figured I would put this buggy up here to see if someone was interested. I am happy to do some trading and get some FC's back on the track. Or the asking price on the buggy is $37,500. It is built to B.I.T.D. and S.N.O.R.E. tech standards. Just add some personal touches and a few small bits and get straight into offroad racing with this car. I have put about 10-15 miles on it since construction was complete. Car was built for Class 3000 specs. But, will run in other classes. Engine is from CBM with their custom tuned ecu and harness.
Let me know what you have.
