What material to bond strainer to scavenger fitting?

I pulled the scavenger fittings out of the oil pan of my FE to inspect them and both of the metal strainers are loose and not soldered/brazed? to the fitting. What is usually used to bond them?

Alexis Rear Uprights

Hi all,

I own the pattern for the Alexis rear upright, a really well-designed, symmetrical rear upright for the Mk14, Mk15 and Mk18, though it can be machined to work for a variety of applications, and to accept whatever bearings suit your needs.

I'm about have a run done at a local foundry in aluminum and wanted to offer fresh, un-machined castings to whoever might be interested. Here is the pattern and a casting, for reference:

The castings should take 4-6 weeks. Price per piece is $300 + shipping.

Let me know if you're interested, I want to get a run started next week.

Best,
Matt

Track provided tow/safety crews

Question about the tow/safety crews:

I am under the understanding that COTA crews were used and that they are very slow and not the most competent.... relative to the variety of cars that we race.

Is this going to be the case when SCCA gets to Indy? Does anyone have SVRA Indy experience with this subject?

In CA the two main Regions own their own safety trucks. What is it like through out the rest of the US? Is it a valuable service for tracks to provide the safety/tow trucks for small clubs without tow truck equipment?

March 26, 2017 SCCA COTA Group 6 Lap 1 Video

It was a wild and wooly weekend down in Austin for Group 6 in the SCCA's Hoosier Tire Super Tour event.

- 57 cars in the run group
- A mix of P1, P2, FA, FB, FC, FE, FM
- Racing at a premiere racetrack

What could go wrong?

Answer below:

http://ift.tt/2nBsHow

We didn't hear of any injuries afterwards, so hopefully the driver was okay. Until I saw the video that evening I didn't even know the FA had completely flipped, because when I came around after restarting my car it was sitting upright on all 4 wheels.

Air jack safety stands wanted

I'm looking for a set of 3 safety stands to use with my air jacks and wondered if anyone has any for sale?

I'm sure someone out there has a set of stands that are no longer being used or were acquired with a whole other pile of 'spares' that came with a race car. I'm happy to pay to take them off your hands.

Reply, PM, or email rob (at) carbonio (dot) com

Thank you and I will post when I find a set so don't assume this ad is old.

Leakdown Test - Hose Substitution

I recently purchased a Longacre 2 guage leak down tester only to find out that my hose selection was incorrect and it does not fit the spark plug hole.

I have available another hose assembly that came with a single guage leak down tester that fits the spark plug hole and am considering using this subject to input from the forum on whether this could affect the accuracy of my readings.

The Longacre 2 guage hose assembly at its narrowest (threaded spark plug adapter) is about 3/16" diameter and the single guage hose assembly at its narrowest (same location) is about 7/64".

Thoughts?

Schroth "Clubman" Harness in FF?

Looking to replace my out of date Willans 6-pt harness in my PRS Club Ford and came across the Schroth "Clubman", sold for $220 by just about everyone.

Can be had in clip-in or bolt-in, pull-up tightener or pull-down, same price for any variation. I would likely go with the bolt-in and pull down.

I notice the lap belt is 2". I've seen a 2" lap belt referred to as 'safer' than a 3" though I can't imagine why. I thought 3" lapbelts were required for SCCA but looking at the 2017 GCR there is no specification on belt width in the "Drivers Restraint System" section. How is a 2" belt safer than a 3"? The 3" wide material of my outdated Willans works fine with my HANS.

The submarine belts look to be going to a single connector that goes into the buckle at the bottom, different from most 'formula car' harnesses that have the separate belts with a loop that goes around the shoulder belts.

Anyone know if the Clubman will work in a tight formula car cockpit? Empirical experience would be a plus.

He was a wonderful Brother

When ever Jeff and I wanted to go racing in Portland we'd give my brother a call. Jeff's truck was a little 4 cylinder Toyota Tacoma and my brother had a Ford F250 with a home build camper on the back and a gigantic diesel engine (dating from some time in the 1970's). He used it to travel, camp and hunt all over the western united states. An avid hunter, skier and fisherman, he spent many years being an outdoor guide in Montana in the summer and teaching skiing at Vail in the winter. Despite all of that he was a gentle soul with a real love for his wife and two children. In addition to all that, he had a real passion for auto mechanics. No matter who called, if you had a car issue he and his super well equipped garage were ready to help. An oil change or an engine replacement - didn't matter. And he had an unending LOVE of all things Porsche. When he reached to point in life where he could afford one, he owned several 944 always in tip top shape.

Shortly after I had my quad bypass surgery in 2010, he started a 7 year fight with Parkinson's disease. That battle ended Tuesday night when he put a bullet in his head. We had not seen each other since Christmas last year and only talked on the phone twice. I didn't realize until about an hour ago when I found it on the web that Parkinson's comes with a whole lot of Hallucinations and Delusions which has to be in the mix of what happened to him. He was a super level headed guy with a love for hunting and guns. So I am truly baffled that he choose a gun to end his day. He will be sorely missed here Louis LeRoy Broadhead ---- MY BROTHER.

Thanks for listening.

Brake pad brand swap question

I have been running PFC 01 pads on my FF for several seasons with no issues. A friend really likes the Hawk blue and suggest I try them and see if I like the release better. I have a set in my spares that I bought several years back before deciding on the PFCs.

My question is do I need to turn the rotors prior to trying these out or can I get by with a good deglazing/scuffing? I believe both brands are a similar makeup, if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Event Advice

I've been racing my Lola T204 out west with HMSA, CSRG, and SVRA at Laguna Seca, Sonoma Raceway, Thunderhill, and Portland Intl. Now I have the opportunity to do some racing in the Mid-West and East Coast and would appreciate some advice as to what the best events are in the Mid-West and East from anyone who also races a vintage Formula Ford.

I am anxious to experience some of the famous tracks like Indy, Road America, Barber, Mid-Ohio, Road Atlanta, etc., and am looking forward to making the most of the 2017 season.

Any favorite events/tracks out there? Thanks.

F-Mod Car For Sale ('84 Red Devil) - $5k

Two young kids and other time commitments mean it is time to step away from F-Mod for a while. The car started off as a 1984 Red Devil. It has since been updated/modified several times. I believe it now has a modified KBS back half. The general specs for the car:
- 493 Motor (3 events since it was freshened up)
- Polaris Primary
- Team TSS-04 Secondary
- Chain Drive
- Aluminum fuel tank behind/under the seat back(not a fuel cell)
- 75" wheelbase (was originally a short wheelbase car)
- Electronic Power Steering

Asking price for the car is $5,000 OBO.

The 12'x6' + v-nose enclosed trailer I use for the car is also available and would add $1,000 to the price of the car.

The car is located in the Tampa, FL area. I will be driving up to Ohio at some point this spring/early summer. So, delivery along that route is a potential option.

The car recently finished first and second (in a field of 6) at the Ft Myers Pro Solo. In 2015, I finished mid-pack at nationals in the car, but I think I'm generally a mid-pack driver at this point.

The car currently has a RaceCapture Pro data logger setup and a Digitron tach/EGT. The data logger is setup with engine RPM, throttle position, steering position, and front brake pressure (in addition to the GPS and accelerometer integrated in the unit). It still requires some tinkering, but it integrates fairly well with the SoloStorm app.

There are a lot of spares that would come with the car. Some of them are well used, others are in good shape. I have a couple motors that need top end work and one that was described as a running junk yard motor. I haven't opened it up yet, but I was expecting to put a set of rings in it. There are a few new 493 pistons and a gasket set. I also have a good used primary clutch. Lots of clutch weights. A few different primary and secondary clutches that I believe were used earlier in the car's history. A few suspension and brake spares. A set of wheels with rain tires (older, but still somewhat soft), and 3 other complete sets of wheels (one with new tires - only ran at the Ft Myers Pro, one with last year's tires, and one with the prior year's tired). I have two more sets of wheels that have 1 rim damaged - both damaged during tire mounting.

Replacing one ramp door cable

Did a search here and on Google and could not find the info I wanted.

I have a used, 2004 Haulmark 8x20 Race Trailer I am re-habbing and it only has one ramp door cable. It works fine - tension, etc. - but I would like to put the other cable on for safety, maybe even both since Haulmark sells them as a pair.

My search kept turning up stuff on adjusting the cable by way of adjusting the spring tension. Not necessary I don't think, IF there is only one spring or if the tow are connected in a way that tension is created on the left spring when the door comes down. Right side is fine. I just need to install a cable on the left side.

Because the spring tension is already good, I am hoping I can just thread the new cable into the spring drum, let the door come almost all the way up, and attach the eye end to the door.

Plausible? Tension imbalance? Are springs separate? (entire spring/drum/shaft assy. is covered by interior aluminum)

If so, it seems I could put the new cable on the left side, go up and down with the door a couple of times, and then use the same process to replace the right side cable, though it is possibly under more tension.

Brabham BT21 (ish) Clone

A great project for someone looking for a BT21 FB at half the cost. The car was built in England, designed after a BT21, with hints of BT18 also incorporated into the build. Raced for several years in the UK before finding it's way over to the States.

The sale includes the car as a roller, with Hewland 5 spd, and I also have a set of Revolution wheels and most of a Kent 1600 FF motor if someone wanted to build it back as a vintage FF.

The body was a bit shabby, so I sourced a better BT21 shell, which will go with the car. It has the proper windshield surround.

Currently disassembled for easy transport ;), I can assist with crating and shipping and may be able to deliver, depending on scheduling.

$ 17,500 PM or email serious inquiries.

Bought Car/Have questions

I recently purchased an 20yr old Rocketech that I am converting to an autocross car. Trying to figure out were to get parts seems to be difficult. I am going to change over the final drive but trying to figure out where to get the pulleys (it is a belt drive with a two piece final drive/aluminum with a six bolt pattern) and looking for one on the internet is not proving very helpful. Any ideas?

Also I was looking for brake rotors (so I know before I need). I was looking on the Willwood website and could not find anything close to them dimensionally. Was wondering, are they like rotors off quads or motorbikes? Even looking at the Douglas Wheels page wasn't very descriptive. Is there a place somewhere that specializes in these cars that can give me better insight where to find the parts I need?
Thanks

Head Restraints in Closed Sports Racers

All current racing seat standards include very strong head restraints. Both SFI and FIA standards add the equivalent of 100g's sustained force to head restraint plus a higher load to the shoulder restraint (so the neck doesn't take the load of the body). HANS devices are now called Frontal Head Restraints in FIA documents. They work to maybe a 30° angle.

The head and shoulder restraints can have massive reinforcements and are always secured to the cage.

So I was a little surprised to learn the Elan NP01 had no head restraint. The problem was egress/ingress through the door and over the side protection bars.

How do closed sports racers typically get around this problem?

VIR 'Wild Hare' .... REMINDER

In just two weeks we’re opening the 2017 Royale Formula Ford Challenge Series with the Wild Hare Run, hosted by VDCA and partnered with VRG at VIR, which, along with The Glen, is the most spectacular iconic track we race at. The southern racers are definitely leading the way on entries for this race – we’ve got three signed up from Florida (one is probably a lock on the Cloverleaf Longest Tow award). Perhaps the northern folks are a bit despondent, still enveloped in silky snow and thinking Spring will never arrive. It will definitely be in southern Virginia in two weeks, and if you don’t sign up you’ll miss a glorious time of year, a great Friday night barbecue, the best Saturday night Club dinner of the year and a competitive field at this truly historic track. In addition to the return of last year’s raffle sponsors, Hoosier and Powerslide, you’ll have a chance at VIR to win a set of formula car belts from new sponsors RaceQuip (I love mine) and a $500 labor certificate from Quicksilver RacEngines. Should your early-season alignment not be the best, Momentum Motorsports will also award a 3-hour credit for alignment to a mid-pack racer (who could probably use it). Stonebridge Cryoscience will also award a “hard charger” award for cryo or REM treatment.

Our run group is a little different this year, and much better than the last several. We’ll run with the whole “Group 2” field ONLY on Friday – Saturday and Sunday we have the track to ourselves, except for the last race on Sunday when any non-S2’s in Group 2 can join us (There’s only one entered)! VDCA have pushed the boat out for us; show your support for the VDCA and VIR and enter now!

38 DGA jetting

I'm thinking of fitting a synchronous opening 38 DGV carb to my Pinto powered Van Diemen.

It is currently running a 32/36 DGV with synchronous opening.

The jetting is 185 Main with 160 AC on the primary (small) side and, oddly, a 140 Main with 160 AC on the secondary (bigger) side.

Both throats have F-50 emulsion tubes.

Any ideas on what jetting to use with the 38 DGA carb, also with synchronous opening.

Thanks in advance.

I'm relatively new to FV and have been looking at engine case options for a rebuild. One thing I came across is discussion of the AS41 vs AS21 alloy cases. Does anybody know first of all whether AS21 is available in a type 1 or 3 case that we could use? Evidently a lot (all?) of these were F.I. cases with no port for the mechanical fuel pump.
In a perfect world given the rules, what's the best case to use?

Of course it would be ideal for F1 cars to be able to pass each other at every circuit they visit, but the reality is that Melbourne has always been a bit of an outlier of a circuit in the F1 calendar. A great place to start the season from the point of view of the scale, spectacle, colour and atmosphere, but not a race you can draw too many conclusions from about the season ahead.
It will be harder to overtake generally this season, but there will be plenty of tracks where overtaking will happen and we should probably wait until after China and Bahrain before drawing too many judgments

how to de-glaze rotors

My braking has suffered lately, and I am told my pads and rotors are glazed. I sanded down the pads, but any suggestions about how to de-glaze the rotors?

Proper Plug Heat Range for a Pinto FC

A friend of mine borrowed my FC car (95 VD) for drivers school and did the race at CMP this weekend. Both times he complained of the engine loading up on him.

I suggested he was letting it sit and idle too long and needed to keep the revs up in general. Was also the advice he got from some people at the school.

But he said he had issues on the race track at CMP. Now I never had issues myself but I was thinking that maybe he needs to run a hotter plug, to keep them cleaner.

So questions:

1.) What is approapriate heat range of plugs for a Pinto FC
2.) What else may be the issue?

I have not had a chance to talk to him about it so I do not have all the details.

Fuel cell rotary molded vs bladder

I have been looking at new fuel cells and the one which will fit my car the best is a rotary molded (hard rubber) fuel safe. All the other wedge shaped cells are a softer bladder material. Both are rated the same. Is the hard rubber less safe in an incident?

Two wheels off at Turn 9, Willow Springs

T9 at Willow Springs.....what can I say.

Just a friendly reminder to everyone that if you go two wheels off coming out of turn 9 to keep the car straight and do not try to re enter the track until you have all 4 wheels on the pavement at the entry to the pit entrance. See the photo below.

If you try to come back on early, you will spin and cross traffic at very high speed as what happened in the accident during the FF race this Saturday that sent a driver to the hospital and damaged three cars.

Your initial impulse will be to try to get all four wheels back up on the pavement. All the skid marks crossing the track are testimony to all who have made this mistake. Again see photo...... You will have to fight the wheel and to a little off-roading to keep the car straight due to all the traction shifting to the right tires. More than likely you will be travelling well over 95 mph. I have gone two wheels off there three times myself at that speed.

I bring this up because this recovery is not taught very well in any of the driver's schools, and many have to find out about it the hard way......

Drive safe... :checkered:
