All current racing seat standards include very strong head restraints. Both SFI and FIA standards add the equivalent of 100g's sustained force to head restraint plus a higher load to the shoulder restraint (so the neck doesn't take the load of the body). HANS devices are now called Frontal Head Restraints in FIA documents. They work to maybe a 30° angle.
The head and shoulder restraints can have massive reinforcements and are always secured to the cage.
So I was a little surprised to learn the Elan NP01 had no head restraint. The problem was egress/ingress through the door and over the side protection bars.
How do closed sports racers typically get around this problem?
